History of Bacopa Monnieri
Ever wondered how ancient religious scholars in India could memorize lengthy sacred hymns and scriptures? The secret lies in a beautiful magical plant called Bacopa monnieri. In fact, it is so miraculous that it is even named “Brahmi”, after Brahma, the creator god of the Hindu pantheon.
People in the ancient days recognized Bacopa monnieri as a powerful herb which enhanced their cognitive abilities; it is for this reason it has been the star of traditional Ayurvedic medicine, used for the longest time in treating mind-related health concerns. The term “Ayurveda” is a combination of the Sanskrit words ayur (meaning life) and veda (meaning science or knowledge). Originated in India, Ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest medical systems in the world, and remains part of the country’s traditional health care system up till this day.
Bacopa monnieri was first described around the 6th century A.D. in ancient Sanskrit books such as the Great Trilogy (Caraka Samhita, Sushrita Samhita, and Astanga Hridaya) and Atharva-Veda texts. These texts categorize Bacopa monnieri as a Medhya Rasayana (medhya meaning intellect; rasayana meaning rejuvenation); a class of herbs known to improve memory and intelligence. Bacopa monnieri has been so revered over the centuries that the Hindus used it in their rituals to consecrate new-born babies, believing it will open the gateways to knowledge.
In the present time, Bacopa monnieri is now acknowledged as a nootropic, which is a “smart drug” that enhances brain function. Modern day research has scientifically validated this herb for its historical use, where numerous studies have demonstrated the herb’s abilities to improve memory, learning capabilities and concentration.
